New Exhibit Hall

The new 30,860 square foot Cache County Event Center was built to replace the smaller buildings at the popular county fairgrounds.  The existing facilities could no longer accommodate the size venues and shows that the beautifully wooded fairgrounds attracted. The new Events Center has a large 20,000 square foot hall that is acclaimed for its wonderful acoustics by the many visiting shows and bands. It includes four smaller reception halls, community rooms, a full kitchen facility capable of serving thousands of annual fair guests, and a surrounding cover lanai under which fair booths are set up and displayed in season.

The existing fairground buildings were iconic to the local valley residents so there was quite a bit of push-back when the County decided to replace with a bigger events center on the same site.  Design West Architects presented an elegant design that reduced the scale of the building by using multiple roof lines and building masses.  Out of respect to existing turn-of-the-century farm buildings, the architect selected a design motif that respected the agricultural underpinnings of the valley (Cache Valley has one of the largest and best agriculture universities in the United States). This was done by designing the structure to reflect an oversized barn structure. Some of the original beam work harvested from the older buildings were used as main features in the lobby.

The elegant new Events Center has been well received by the community and performers alike.  The popularity of the facility’s design is evidenced by the fact that actual usage rate of the facility by out of valley performers and organizations far exceeds what was initially anticipated. The new facility is a powerful statement that designers can respect the context and history of a building’s environment while making it sustainable and functional.
