Building Renovation

The renovation of the Historic J. William Robinson Federal Building was a complete remodel of the first floor and a partial remodel of the second floor. The original lobby on the first floor was not affected by the remodel as to keep the historic nature of the building. The completed building changes were required to best serve the Social Security Administration that now occupies the building. The existing smaller and some-what disjointed floor plan gave way to an open floor plan that utilizes multi-function spaces while allowing for confidential client interview areas.

 

The existing mechanical system that served the first floor was 80 percent demolished while some of the exterior zoning was kept in place. The existing hydronic heating was also re-used to offset the high winter losses along the historic first floor window system. New variable volume terminal boxes and new ductwork were incorporated to serve the new open office spaces and the high capacity client waiting area. Existing air handlers were utilized to meet expanded cooling needs and the roof mounted air cooled chiller did not need to be upgraded at this time. The existing historic restrooms were retrofitted with new fixtures and two additional toilet rooms were added for client use.
