New District Buildings
Design West Architects designed a new state-of-the-art Headquarters Facility for the Salt Lake Mosquito Abatement District that allows them to better fulfill their duties of mosquito abatement while becoming a regional resource to other abatement districts.
The new office building houses the administrative functions of the facility as well as the new Level 2 Biosafety Testing Laboratory. Included in the administrative building is a large conference / training room, office space for full time employees, kitchen and break area, employee restrooms with locker rooms and showers, and a large laundry room. A significant area of the administrative building is the Level 2 Biosafety Laboratory which can easily be upgraded to a Level 3 lab, if needed. The laboratory is comprised of several individual spaces including a preparation room, extraction room and the testing (PCR) room. It is located near the Colony Rearing room and has its own exterior entrance allowing samples to be dropped off in a location away from the main public entrance. Additional buildings designed for the new headquarters include a bunk house, a large vehicle storage / maintenance building, chemical storage building with raised loading dock and dedicated pesticide testing building.
Design West first completed a feasibility study for Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District which analyzed the feasibility of expanding on the same site to achieve the District’s program goals. This study helped the District weigh the pro’s and con’s of utilizing existing buildings and expanding on a tightly constrained site against the pro’sand con’s of relocation.
